Current Situation

The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control reported escalating domestic infections as of May 20, 2025. Medical visits for COVID-19 reached 19,097 in week 20 (May 11-17), with projections indicating the epidemic will “reach its peak in mid-to-late June, with the highest number of COVID-19 medical visits in a single week estimated to be 55,000 to 65,000.”

Mortality and Vulnerability

This year has documented 330 severe cases and 47 deaths, predominantly affecting elderly individuals and those with chronic conditions. Notably, “more than 90% of the confirmed and fatal cases were among individuals who were not vaccinated with the JN.1 vaccine.”

Vaccination Progress

As of May 18, approximately 2.116 million people received JN.1 vaccination, representing an 8.79% national rate. Among seniors over 65, first-dose coverage stands at 18.3% with second-dose rates at 0.48%. Weekly vaccination appointments jumped 57% in the week of May 12-18.

Medical Supplies

Taiwan has secured substantial antiviral reserves: 207,000 doses of remdesivir, 469,000 courses of Paxlovid, and 11,000 courses of molnupiravir. Additionally, 3.169 million JN.1 vaccines remain available for persons aged six months and older.
